What to know before visiting Balkan Region

Balkan Region, located in western Turkmenistan along the shores of the Caspian Sea, is a land of dramatic landscapes, ancient heritage and remarkable natural wonders. From the golden sands of the Karakum Desert and rugged Kopet Dag and Balkan Mountains to the turquoise waters of the Caspian coast, the region offers some of the most diverse scenery in the country.

Balkan is home to some of Turkmenistan’s most iconic destinations, including the ancient city of Nisa, the spectacular Yangykala Canyon, the Avaza tourism zone and the mysterious Darvaza Gas Crater. The region also preserves important traces of ancient civilizations and Silk Road history, while its coastal landscapes provide opportunities to experience a different side of Turkmenistan.

Turkmenbashi is a coastal city on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea and one of Turkmenistan’s main maritime gateways. The city grew around its historic port and today combines a strong maritime character with modern infrastructure and striking Caspian landscapes. The Turkmenbashi International Seaport serves as an important connection between Central Asia and Europe by sea, road and rail.
